M.Sc.
Biotechnology
Duration
: 2 years
No.

Biotechnology
is highly multi-disciplinary. It has its foundations in many fields
including biology, microbiology, biochemistry, molecular
biology,
genetics, chemistry and chemical and process engineering. Historically,
biotechnology was an art rather than a science, exemplified
in
the manufacture of wines, beers, cheeses, etc, where the techniques
of manufacturer were well worked out and reproducible but the
molecular
mechanisms were not understood.
SCOPE:
The
scope of biotechnology in India is immense and has an estimated
market of 2.5 billions, out of which 60% is in health sector, 10%
in
agriculture
and rest in bioinformatics, genomics, others. The emergence of newer
pharmacy companies headed by technically qualified
managers
in the country as well as the impact of biotechnological products
becoming abundant in countries abroad has changed the
prospects
of this science at home. These neo-pharmacy are taking up challenges
to invest in their in- house R & D as well as collaborating
with
national laboratories and centers of excellence to cut short the
time to reap the benefits of this fast emerging area.
A
postgraduate in biotechnology can find lucrative employment in the
various fields such as:
•
Bioprocess technology, enzyme technology, waste technology, environmental
technology, renewable technology, resources technology,
plant
and animal agriculture, health care, plant biotechnology, animal
biotechnology, bioinformatics, marine biotechnology, industrial
biotechnology.
•
Bioprospecting for novel antimicrobials and industrially and clinically
important enzymes.
•
Bioprocess development at the laboratory level for the microbial
treatment for industrial effluents.
•
Students of biotechnology are continually exposed to the working
cultures of the various laboratories/ industries actively engaged
in the
frontier
areas of biotechnological research. The department arranges summer
training in top-notch laboratories/ industries in the country.
